My name is Jocelyn Bertram and I am a theatre artist based in Toronto, Ontario.
The very first time I fell in love with musical theatre was at a performance of Phantom of the Opera in Toronto when I was in the fourth grade. From there, it was movie musicals, cast recordings, community theatre, and any other way to access this new, magical thing I had found. The internet was very helpful in this endeavour, and through YouTube, Tumblr, and various sites, I was introduced not only to the glamour of live theatre, but with likeminded people who shared my love for it.
Then I saw a wonderful show called Wicked and decided that what I saw on that stage was what I needed to do for the rest of my life. This of course resulted in more extensive training, eventually getting my degree from St. Clair College’s Musical Theatre Performance Program, and entering the musical theatre industry.
I very quickly learned that theatre is either one extreme or another. It can be a whirlwind of auditions, rehearsals, and gigs; but more often than not, it is a waiting game. I got a ‘side hustle’ which I love, continued my training, and have been working to find creative outlets for myself. One of these creative outlets is writing, it has always been something I have enjoyed doing, and I currently have a few projects on the go.
Somehow, this brought me to this site. I love to write. I love theatre. When this idea came to me, it seemed almost silly that I had never thought of this before; to combine my two passions. You always hear “write what you know”, but what about “write what you love”?
The blog contains four categories. The first, Reflections is a space for my thoughts on productions I have seen, as well as on the theatre industry as a whole. The second, Interviews is for conversations with people experiencing the theatre industry right now. My favourite thing about this industry is the connections you can make, and this category is to celebrate that. The third category is Guest Writers, where I open up submissions from other theatre lovers to discuss their opinions or upcoming work. The final category is this one; Creator’s Corner. This is for me to drop in and post little updates. Some pieces seen on this site may take longer to put together than others, so this page is to let you know what is coming up in between! New and upcoming posts will also be announced on my Instagram page @missjocebert , so feel free to follow along there too!
If you are interested in being featured on this blog as a Guest Writer, or in arranging an interview, please send me an email at bothsidesofthecurtain@outlook.com and we can chat! Thank you so much for taking the time to check out this site, and please come visit us again to see what is happening on both sides of the curtain.
